Together with our Sikh neighbours from Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar down the street, we will be creating a community garden on the Northeast Pioneers Greenway.
“The Greenway Garden” will help beautify the Greenway, which is a popular destination for community residents to walk, jog, skate, and cycle. In August, 2011, the two groups will conduct the sod turning ceremony and the first stage of planting the garden (the second stage of planting will occur in May, 2012). The garden will feature a diverse array of native Manitoba species in the form of flowers, grasses, and shrubs.
Both faith communities view this initiative as a tremendous opportunity to not only beautify the neighbourhood, but to also learn about and appreciate each other’s faiths and seek common ground, while respecting differences. Both groups hope this first joint initiative will blossom into future opportunities to work together on other areas of mutual interest. Another hope is to inspire other community or faith groups to develop gardens as well, with a dream for many gardens along the Greenway.

We will be putting in 3 shrubs and transplanting some orange daylilies from the River East church property.
Our new plants will need to be watered and weeded according to the weather. If you can volunteer to take one shift, please let Sara Jane (668-6671) or Gurpreet (990-1717) know.
Tulips and daffodils: as there will be lots of empty space initially, we’ll throw in some bulbs for some spring colour. Stay tuned for the request for help.
Grasses and flowers will be ordered from Prairie Originals, a nursery near Selkirk that specializes in native Manitoba species. They will supply about 200 plugs (small plants), which will planted 1 per square foot. They should all bloom already in our first season so everyone can enjoy!
For the first two seasons, the garden will need careful tending – mostly watering and weeding – to be sure the plants get established well. After that, because these species are evolved to survive in our climate, they should need very little care. There will be opportunity to sign up.
