An ancient Christian tradition celebrates January 6, Epiphany, as the time when the wise men from the East are guided to Christ. This day marks the event when God’s good news bursts beyond its initial boundaries; it is the very first time Christ is revealed to the nations represented by these foreign kings.
The church calendar recognizes an entire season of Epiphany from January 6 until the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday. During this season at River East MB, we focus our worship on God’s movement outward, on the Spirit’s desire and design to continue to reveal the good news about Christ.
The gospel of Mark begins:
“This is the Good News about Jesus Christ, the Son of God.”
Over the Sundays of Epiphany this year, we read from the first chapter of the Mark. As we worship Christ, we recall why Christ is good news for us and for our neighbours. And in doing so we answer for ourselves a question Jesus once asked, “And who is my neighbor?”
To be a people of faith
is both to search within ourselves for growth
and also to reach out to neighbours
in service and invitation.
