Our Spiritual Geography

The Season of Easter 2012

During the Sundays between Easter and Pentecost we

celebrate the resurrection of Jesus and, as a community,

give thanks for the hope, joy and transformation God has

made possible. Faces turned to the risen Christ, we move

forward from the celebration newly charged with courage

and purpose to continue our journey. This year, in the

weeks following Easter Sunday, we will explore our spiritual

geography, noting the places of our struggles, progress and

failures.

Genesis gives us the story of beginnings: the creation of

the physical world: land, water, sky and life itself. Psalmists

and prophets have found in the created world images for

poetry and metaphors for life experiences. Trees bear fruit,

the floods clap their hands, hills provide refuge, a river runs

quietly through the eternal city and the wind blows where it

will.

Metaphors from the physical landscape can serve

to map our spiritual pilgrimage through rough places or

plain, under clear sky or on stormy waters. They give us

language to describe the sacred places of our inner terrain

and describe the weather of the heart. They lead to a better

understanding of the ways we encounter God.

We will include Creation Care Sunday in our series on

spiritual geography. Throughout the season there will be

opportunity to embrace our role of caring for the earth by

responding to the active transportation challenge outlined by

our Witness and Service Commission.
