The World Is About To Turn
On October 13, nine REMBers discussed the Bible passages for Advent and Christmas. Some themes emerged: total upheaval; God is turning the world upside down; injustice isn’t permanent.
Advent is about expectancy for this upheaval.
When, as an infant refugee, God-in-Christ unexpectedly entered the world to take up residence here, the world turned on its head.
When, at the end of the ages, Christ returns in power, the radical, upside down character of God’s way will come to completion.
In the meantime, during the season of Advent, we stand at attention, alert as angels on guard , watching for signs of the world turning; preparing for the arrival of Christ.
During Advent, we deliberately enter the momentum of turning:
- turning deeper to prepare our hearts for God’s coming,
- turning outward toward the suffering of the world,
- turning with the God of justice who “wields mercy as a sword,”
- actively waiting for God who turns the world upside down.
